"Dare to be Naive" --- R. Buckminster Fuller

Syntropy blog: A Big Picture, Conceptual Introduction to Biology: EEB 122

I wrote a detailed review of OpenYaleCourses's EEB 122: Principles of Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior.

Here are some highlights:

  • Startling: "survival of the fittest" is wrong!

  • The wonderful metaphor of the theater in evolution (due to Evelyn Hutchinson)

  • A remarkable description of El NiƱo

  • Evolutionary Medicine may be one of the most significant benefits of the theory of evolution

  • I was inspired to research the frequency of major geological events (earthquakes, volcanos, etc)

  • A poignant discussion on biodiversity

  • Biogeochemistry is one of my biggest "discoveries" of the course: it may be one of the most important interdisciplinary fields for Human survival

  • I reference the Buckminster Fuller Challenge

  • The importance of geography

  • A survey of other freely available introductory biology courses

CJ Fearnley was an early leader in the adoption and implementation of Linux and Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). In 1993, he began introducing Linux to the Greater Philadelphia region through his leadership position in the Philadelphia Area Computer Society (PACS). In 1995, he initiated the Philadelphia area Linux User Group (PLUG). Then CJ built LinuxForce to be the "go-to" firm for Linux. CJ has applied his organizational and leadership talent to building Buckminster Fuller's legacy. CJ published an essay "Reading Synergetics: Some Tips" to help students of Fuller's magnum opus, "Synergetics: Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking". He has maintained "The R. Buckminster Fuller FAQ" since 1994. In 2002 CJ started building the Synergetics Collaborative (SNEC) as an organization to bring together people with an interest in Synergetics' methods and principles in workshops, symposia, seminars, and other meetings. CJ received a BA in Mathematical Sciences and Philosophy from Binghamton University in 1989.
